modern media

Okay so I do watch a lot of TV. Most of the time, it's background noise, and usually crap. I've noticed that Reality Tv has taken over. Almost every channel has some sort of reality show. Now, that's not to say that I havent been sucked into the world of crap TV. I too am guilty of watching such terrible shows a "Daisy of Love" and even a few episodes of "Jersey Shore" (which is just awful).
Maybe im one of the few who still likes to watch educational shows. -not the boring kind like you see on PBS, but the Travel and Discovery Channel's put out some great shows that you can learn something from.

So the point to all this rambling is when will this trend end? Or will it get even worse?

  1. We'll be able to talk about some of these themes in discussions on narrative and genre, industry, audience, and even the debates chapter on documentary. Thanks for raising the Reality TV issue!

BTW, you won't have to post links every time--I'll have the general blog links available for the class elsewhere on Bb. Thanks!

  2. No ashley, i think reality shows will eventually end. It's like I was talking about with the novelty factor, ideas fade out over time, and we will eventually need something fresh to watch. Networks are just digging themselves into deeper holes with the garbage reality shows they air.

  3. I'm the same as you! Reality TV is just crap, but I watched jersey shore for about 4 hours straight one night when I found it randomly. Every episode was entertaining, but still sickening by the end.

The thing with reality is that people watch them and their incredibly cheap and easy to make, But I w love educational shows, I watch CNN in the morning, daily show at night ( i still count that as news) and cant wait for "LIFE" the new "planet Earth series" to begin on discovery.

  4. I have actually wondered the same thing-will reality TV ever end? And, if so, what's next? I feel that reality TV was a good idea at first. Who wouldn't want to watch someone's every waking moment? However, the novelty has certainly worn off for me. I think the main problem with reality TV now is that is seems anyone can get a show (they just have to live in Orange County, have New Jersey accents, or be a washed-up celeb). By the same token, I feel that realty TV shows fail to put forth any real depth in terms of a plot and fails to catch my long-term attention.

  5. I agree that I catch myself watching Jersey shore but when I really think about the quality I'm disgusted with myself. I love the Discovery Channel and Cat 101 and the animal shows. I also enjoy the food netwook and other shows that are very informational. I wonder though if reality shows will really decrease? I feel like they might increase. Who knows?
